How Acupuncture Can Help Your Fitness

Acupuncture is often overlooked as a serious method of improving a person’ health, but it should not be. Its effectiveness at helping people to reduce their chronic pain and live healthier lifestyles has been proven time and time again. When done regularly, acupuncture treatment can drastically improve a person’s overall fitness. Unlike many other pain and tension treatments, the positive effects of acupuncture can often be felt immediately after a treatment session. Fitness extends from a person’s physical health to their emotional well-being, all of which can be helped by acupuncture. Below are some of the main ways that this can happen.

Acupuncture has been shown to improve the rate at which a person’s body recovers after strenuous activity. This makes it a very good option for athletes or those who work out often and maintain very active lifestyles. A treatment after a workout can cause muscles and the rest of the body to heal and recover faster than if the treatment was not done. Many professional athletes choose to have acupuncture treatments regularly because of their rigorous playing and travel schedules.

Fitness and the way that a person is feeling mentally are two things that go hand in hand. Stress or any other type of mental strain can have very adverse effects on a person’s body. Acupuncture is a perfect way to naturally reduce stress and give the body an instant sense of calmness. Many of the points that are used during an acupuncture treatment are known to improve mood give a person positive energy. Even though this can be felt very quickly, some of the long term effects of acupuncture can also have a positive impact on a person’s mood and general outlook on life. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce blood pressure, improve sleep and give people more natural energy. All of these things add up to a much happier existence over time.

Injury recovery is one of the biggest reasons why people choose acupuncture treatment. Many people who try this have suffered from chronic pain from injuries for years and tried many treatments, all while never experiencing beneficial results. After trying acupuncture they end up seeing a massive reduction in their pain, and in many cases even see that their injuries begin to heal. The healing of injured muscles clearly takes time, but acupuncture is a great way to speed up the process a bit.

Although chronic pain is one of the biggest motivators when people choose to try acupuncture, day to day aches and pains are also a common reason. The stresses of daily life and physical activity while on the job or at home can cause the body to become very tense. When muscles become rigid and tense, the likelihood of injury increases dramatically, and overall health can be diminished. Scheduling a regular acupuncture treatment is something that many people do in order to fight back against this tension. The more regularly this is done, the better results people will see as they notice their muscle tension decreasing, and in turn their stress levels and overall fitness improving.

These are just some of the ways that acupuncture can improve the overall fitness of a person. It is a time tested and proven method for reducing stress, easing muscle tension, improving mood and speeding up muscle recovery.

Many people may not be seeing the results they want in the first week of their new workout plan, this is exercise failure number one! Giving up is the last thing you need to do. You are well on your way, every move, every workout, every calorie and pound lost are getting you one step closer to your goal.

Even if you think you are not getting the results you are looking for physically just yet, think about all the other benefits your reaping from exercising: Better sleep, more energy, healthier, reduces stress and depression, exercising releases chemicals that make you happier!

Getting into a habit of working out is going to make it easier to stick with it. Make it part of your daily routine. Whenever you have the chance to be active, do it! Don’t think that because you only have 20 minutes that you can’t put that to good use, longer workouts are not more beneficial than more frequent, shorter workouts.

Also exercising with friends helps you to stick with your workouts as well. They are holding your accountable to get out there, you’re less likely to give up knowing they are counting on you to be there. They might also be able to see results in your performance that you may not notice, which will give you the confidence boost to stick with it!

Don’t give up just because you are not the perfect size you want to be just after a week. Stick with it and you will soon see the results you are looking for, also reaping in so many other health benefits you never knew you were missing out on!

You did not put on the weight over night, or even within a week, you surely won’t see it come off that quickly!

We are now 11 days into May, what have you been doing to celebrate National Health and Fitness Month?! Back in our post were we first informed you about May being National Health and Fitness Month, check here for a refresher.

We told you it doesn’t matter where your workouts took place, as long as you were up and moving.

It’s all about fitting fitness into your daily life. Here are a few tips from this slideshow for a few ways you can sneak in some calorie burning moves. Here’s my favorite:

Walk more! No matter what you are doing or where you are going, there is always ways to walk more. You can do this by taking the stairs over the elevator or escalator. Park your car farther way at the grocery store. Take a stroll around the block after dinner. Walk to the gas station for those goodies, instead of taking your car.

Any workout is better than no workout. Whether it is a couple 15-minute workouts throughout your day, or simply one 1-hour workout, they all make a difference. I have found working out at home makes it easier to squeeze in a few shorter workouts. I found a great article about how working out at home can be easier than you think. Check it out here.

Having your own personal home exercise equipment makes it easier to fit in the workouts. I’ve found having my own treadmill makes me more likely to use it than when I had to drive back and forth to the gym.

Many days you only have 30 minutes, so who wants to waste any of that time driving to and from a gym. I will jump on my treadmill for 20 minutes, taking 5 minutes to get ready and another 5 to get back to my other clothes. I try to do this once in the morning and once more during the day, this comes out to be a 40 minute workout daily!

So that is what I am doing to stay active for National Health and Fitness Month, what are you doing?!

Everyone has had it. That dreaded post-lunch feeling where your eyelids feel weighted, and it is a struggle to keep your head upright. The afternoon slump can ruin your productivity and make the rest of your day hard to wade through. The problem can be avoided if you eat the right foods for lunch. Making great nutritional choices will make your afternoon enjoyable and help you be ready to face that business report or hustle through the kids’ soccer practices. Here are five super food choices for healthy lunches.

Quinoa
Quinoa is famous for its incredibly high level of protein: 28 grams in just one cup! This is so much protein that, when eaten for dinner, your body may store the nutritional value because you did not have time to use it; for those trying to lose weight, this is a negative. That is why this grain is the perfect choice for lunch! You will have plenty of daylight hours to utilize its health benefits so it won’t hurt your diet, and you will have plenty of good energy to finish your day strong. It is also a great choice because it can be cooked the night before work and kept in the fridge – quinoa is great cold!

Tuna
There are a few fish that, due to their high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, make excellent lunch choices, and tuna is one of these. The big appeal of tuna over other so-called super fish is its ease: tuna is readily available in tins that are super portable for lunch. Tuna is also easy to dress up or down. Toss it with your favorite vinaigrette and vegetables, like tomatoes or asparagus, or just put it on a bed of greens. You can also use it as a healthy sandwich meat, but opt for pita bread or a whole-wheat wrap, since too much bread can lead to that afternoon slump.

Black Beans
Along with protein, iron is one of the most important nutrients that, when eaten in recommended amounts, can translate into good energy. Black beans are low in fat, and high in iron and protein – so you know they are great for you! Like tuna and quinoa, black beans are also incredibly easy to use as a lunch food. If you wash a can of beans the night before, you can go ahead and prep your lunch. Make a soup, use it as a condiment for a wrap or flatbread, or toss it with quinoa or rice.

Dark Chocolate
Just because you are on a diet, does not mean you should deprive yourself of a treat. A small square of dark chocolate is the perfect ending to your lunch. Since it is high in antioxidants, so you’ll be doing yourself a favor by having dessert after your high-energy meal.

Author Bio: Liz Childers loves keeping quinoa in the pantry for an easy lunch. She blogs from home about topics like finding a good Spyderco knife or setting up your new birdfeeder.

May is here which means it’s National Fitness Month!! Are you ready for Summer? I hope so. Some of you might still be experiencing some carry-over rain from April but hopefully we will all be enjoying some good ol’ sunshine before too long.

Here at TreadmillCoupons.com, we wanted to welcome this special time of year with a post geared directly toward National Fitness Month by providing some advice that will help you with your fitness goals.

May is the time National Fitness Month because it’s probably been a while since you looked at your New Year’s Resolutions. Am I right? I’m right, aren’t I? Dig into your junk drawer and find that list you put together of all the things you were going to do this year to get your body in shape. It’s Checkpoint Time!

It doesn’t matter if you’ve stuck to your goals or not. If you quit exercising as soon as February hit, no worries. That’s why we have these little checkpoints. Let’s go over some of the basic things that you can do to take advantage of National Fitness Month

Exercise Anywhere and Everywhere

Do whatever it takes to get your body moving. Go to the gym or workout at home. Some people like the gym because being in front of people makes them want to workout harder so that other people think they’re cool. Some people like working out at home because they don’t feel comfortable exercising in front of strangers.

It doesn’t matter.

The important thing is that you workout. Go for a jog, hit the weights, or ZUMBA!

Since summer break is coming up, you might be planning a nice summer vacation. No problem! You can exercise while on vacation by running on the beach, swimming, surfing, bike riding, etc. Anything is possible when you’re determined enough!

Healthy Summer Picnics

Fitness exercise is only half of what National Fitness Month should mean to you. If you don’t have a healthy diet, all your exercise will go down the drain. Here are a few healthy picnic ideas for you to consider this summer:

Veggie Sandwiches – Easy to make from scratch and even teens love ‘em!

Coconut Water – this is both a refreshing and healthy alternative to soda pop.

Pineapple upside down cake, macaroni salad, Chicken Caesar Salad, and more all a few ideas from a post Gold’s Gym did on Summer’s Guide to Food and Fitness.

Almond Crusted Chicken Fingers – That link leads to an awesome recipe on how to make chicken fingers that taste great and are healthy. Chicken Fingers make for a great Picnic dish.

Don’t Give Up

One of the biggest reasons people stop exercising and dieting is because they get discouraged. Don’t let a few failures get you down. You are bigger than that and are totally capable of succeeding. You have to make healthy choices and workouts available. You will never eat right if all you have in the pantry is Pop Tarts and Potato Chips. You will never go to the gym if you don’t designate an hour of the day to exercise. You want to be healthy, now just make it happen. And the National Fitness Month is a great place to start.

To increase the levels of your workout you need to be doing the basics right first. If you know the basic you will be able to workout effectively. When this is done you will notice considerable changes, so follow these few steps to bring your workout to the next level.

Hydration

Hydration is one of the most important things to remember when working out. You should aim to consume 3 liters of water a day.

This is about an average size glass of water every hour, which isn’t that much to ask of anyone. Another thing to remember is that you can damage your bladder if you over hydrate your body. Remember not to drink all the water at once, space it out equally throughout the day.

Stretching

Stretching is a very important element of your workout. People tend to neglect stretching because they are too tired to do anything else. Even if people do stretch they end up rushing through them and doing more damage than good. They don’t get the full benefit of each stretch.

Stretching is done to improve our flexibility. Flexibility is the range of motion that is available to a joint or joints. It improves muscle balance around a joint, which in turn improves our overall posture.

Stretching reduces the chance of getting injured either in sports or just working out. It also increases the blood and nutrient supply to muscles and cartilage. This then decreases the chance on you having muscle soreness.

Protein

Protein is key to muscle development. If you are going to the gym to become bigger or if you are just trying to get fit, Protein is a must in your diet. Protein can be gotten from protein supplement if you dont have time to eat. However the most healthy way to get protein is by eating meat.

Turkey has the highest protein amount out of the white meats while steak and beef also have high protein content. Sometimes it can be hard to find time to fit in the gym, go shopping, cook and eat the food. This is why i tend to order my meat online.

Online butchers provide a premium quality meat at wholesale prices. This means that if you need to get big amounts of protein from meat then you can order more for the same prices as the supermarket. You can save around 40% when you buy online. If you are too busy in work you can get it delivered to your office or at home.

Cardiovascular exercise

Cardio exercise should be done on the days you are not in the gym. Although it does you no harm you if do both weights and cardio on the same day. Cardio usually involves the legs, heart and lungs being used at once thus strengthening them.

To give your heart a proper workout you need to make sure that you do your cardiovascular exercise with a certain amount of intensity, but you don’t want to overdo it. A good way to measure the amount of exertion while exercising is by monitoring your heart rate.

These tips should hopefully step your workout up to the next level. When you have followed these basic tips your body will be ready for more intense training. Make sure to keep your goals insight and have fun eating healthy and exercising.

We’ve all been in this situation. We make a plan to go to the gym at least 5 times a week. We do good for a solid week, maybe even 2 weeks. But after that… we lose interest, it’s too difficult and our motivation is gone. This makes it even more aggravating since you paid all that money on a gym membership that you don’t think is going to get a lot of use. Here are some tips that, if followed, will help you to stay motivated to exercise!

Set a Goal

Setting goals is a great way to stay motivated. Make sure you set a goal that is within your reach though, and expect yourself to reach that goal. Weight loss goals are very effective and have worked for many people. Set a goal for yourself to lose 15 lbs. that way you are expecting something out of yourself and are more likely to fulfill that. For information on how to set a good goal read: How to Stick to Your New Years Resolutions.

Schedule Workout Time

This a very effective motivation tool as well. Setting a specific time period in the day will increase the chances of you going to the gym regularly by a lot. Set aside all plans for at least an hour a day and stick to that time. Force yourself to complete this part of your day and you will be a regular gym-goer in no time!

Get a Buddy!

This is a great way to go to the gym regularly. Find one of your friends and make a commitment with them that the two of you will go to the gym like 5 times a week, for example. That way, you going isn’t your only concern; you made a commitment with your buddy and so you will feel obligated to go to the gym with them.

Losing your motivation is so easy and gaining it back seems extremely difficult, but it’s pretty simple. You just have to trick your brain! You just want to change your mind-set to that of someone who is constantly exercising, an athlete. Getting home fitness equipment makes regular exercise so much easier since your equipment is right there if you ever get bored!

There are two types of skeletal muscle. There is the fast-twitch muscle and there is the slow-twitch muscle. No, one is not better than the other, they both have their own qualities and benefits. The only difference between these two type of muscles is the metabolic pathway that is etched throughout the muscle. Metabolism, as you know, regulates energy and caloric burn and all that fun stuff.

Muscles burn energy by taking Oxygen and Sugar and turning them into electricity within the cells. Basically that is how it works anyway. The process of conversion is called metabolism. Depending on how fast of slow the metabolic energy conversion is determines what the muscles will be best used for.

Let’s look at how these two types of muscles differ from each other.

Fast-Twitch Muscle

This is the type of muscle that is generally developed through weight lifting or sprinting. This muscle tissue is specifically designed to allow a lot of energy to course through it all at once. Thus enabling you to lift a 60 lb. dumbbell while wearing a muscle shirt and looking in the mirror. This is the same type of muscle tissue that allows Usain Bolt to run at speeds of 20+ miles an hour.

Slow-Twitch Muscle

This is the type of muscle that develops through aerobic activities like yoga, or jogging. This muscle is specifically designed to regulate the amount of energy burned, so that you can keep your muscles feeling composed throughout long exercise routines. This type muscle is developed largely by marathon runners who wear livestrong bracelets and sweat bands around their head.

For the most part people are about 50/50 on the slow-twitch fast-twitch split. However people who train for Olympic sprints will have about 80 percent fast-twich muscle and people who train for marathons will have about 80 percent slow-twitch muscle.

Don’t worry about what type of muscle you are developing. Just do what you do, and let the muscle develop naturally.

There is something about exercising that makes those who have not yet developed a regular habit cringe. I mean, who can imagine going out into the heat or even the cold to simply run a couple of miles, where by the end you feel like you are going keel over at any moment? Well, that’s not what people who exercise are thinking. Simply put, for those who are used to exercising on a regular basis, exercise is less of a chore and more of an outlet.

Now, how much would change if that became our view of all the important things that we have to do? We either saw them as a necessary part of our life, as necessary as food or water, or we saw them as something that we can turn to in times of great stress. Such is the mind of an exerciser. And this how to start thinking like an exerciser:

1) Start creating opportunities for exercise

One of the biggest reasons for people not being able to exercise is a perceived lack of time. However, when seriously considered there is all the time in the world when we really want to do something. That is what we need to do, develop that need for exercise by understanding just how important that is, and just like we try to squeeze in a little free time to play the guitar or watch TV, use that time to go exercising. It can make all the difference.

2) Find opportunities to move all day long

For many of us sitting at a desk all day is a huge part of our life, however, even so, we need to be finding any opportunity we can to do a little exercise. For example, if you work in a multi-story building, simply opt to take the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Park in the parking spots far away instead of the ones that are up close. Use any opportunity at all.

3) See exercise as a means to an end

When we start to exercise as a tool for getting what we want, or simply a remedy for all the different problems that come into our lives, we will start to think like true exercisers. For example, exercise is a great way to relieve stress, so what if every time we were stressed we would start exercising? Life would be so much better.

In conclusion, much of becoming someone who loves exercising is a simply change of heart and a change of mind, but that little change of heart can make all the difference.

Exercising at work can be one of the best ways to stick it to the man. If you are getting paid by the hour, you can get your workouts in while you are at work and get some work in on the side.

OK, even if you are striving to be a good employee, you can still exercise while you are at work. You might even be able to boost your productivity– you little workaholic, you—if you will take some time to get out from behind your computer and exercise once in a while.

The type of work that you have will naturally change the types of exercise that you will be able to accomplish while you are working. If you have a job where you are required to interact with other people you won’t want to have them walk in to your cubicle to find you doing pushups in your undershirt.

Here are several exercises that you can try out if you have a more conservative job atmosphere that you need to observe. Stretches are a great way to keep your blood flowing while you are at work.

Most people will lift up their arms and stretch their shoulders one in a while, but if you actually get out of your chair and do some butterflies or reach for your toes, you will instantly get that rush of energy that you always felt in gym class when you were being chased by the 6th graders.

If that doesn’t do it for you, try doing pushups with your feet on the toilet next time you take a break.
