Set Goals Stay Motivated

“The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.” – Arthur C. Clarke

Working out can see like a long term process with long term results. A simple way to reach long term goals is to set and obtain short term goals. This is a great way to stay motivated and to keep with your workout routine. The most important part of goal setting is setting goals that are reachable. You must define exactly what you are trying to achieve. Getting complacent in life is something that no one should do. Striving to be better, stronger and  healthier.

Set your Expectation.

Setting goals that are realistic is a very important thing. You don’t want to set your expectations to high. This will make it so you don’t see reults you have imagined and can get you upset and eventually leading you to stop trying to obtain your goals. Another problem often seen in goal setting is setting goals too low and achieving them quickly and then losing luster leading you to quit striving to be better.  Think of goals as a journey like steppingstones or progressions that are leading you down a path. The path doesn’t have an end just obstetrical in the journey. You should redefine your expectation of your goals. Set short term and long term goals that will allow you to see progress and keep working on your goals. Don’t try to do too much too fast this could lead to an injury and prevent you from working out.  Stretching after working out can help prevent some of these injuries.

Set  Goals that are Specific and Definable.

Avoid setting goals that are not definable. An example of this would be; I want to look better or I want to lose some weight. Don’t be scared to put numbers and percentages in your goals. Remember there is no penalty for not obtaining your own goals. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with goal setting. More effective goal setting for a strength athlete could be a certain number of pounds to lifts. For a bodybuilder, it would be larger in measurements or body fat percentage. For your average Joe it could be as simple as going to the gym everyday or eating healthy meals everyday. The thing to remember is that no matter the goal you need to make them definable and able to be measured so you can see your progression. Finding a workout partner may help you stick to these goals.

Short, Medium, and Long-term Goals

We kinda covered this above but you should understand how important short term, medium and long term goals are. It’s crucial that your short-term ones act as steppingstones towards both the medium and eventually the long-term goals. Yes this seems obvious but many people set long term goals and then get discouraged when they don’t see the results.

Short term goals should be set and reviewed monthly. Medium goals should be set and reviewed on a year to year basis and long term goals should be set are reviewed every 2 – 3 years.

When goal setting there are really only a few things to remember. Redefine your expectations. Ensure your goals are specific and objective. Set short, medium, and long-term goals. If you remember these 3 tips when setting goals you can get in the best shape of your life in no time. Keep setting those goals and working out.
